Summer Time Triathletes and Athletes of Spin Class!!
First, allow me to make this statement. Spin class does not even come close to the perfect feeling and connection of riding on a steep accent to the top of a mountain or grinding it up a hill in your gear on your mountain bike. Spin class does not even come close to the perfect feeling of hammering the big ring on your TT bike with fresh legs putting out solid wattage with minimal effort.
The amazing benefits that spin class provides are unique and can be value driven with solid results that are exceptional when one has some specific training or fitness goals. Being a coach, instructor, and also a student I have seen incredible results with spin classes.
- When the weather is rainy, cold, and wet. A spin bike is a nice way to get out of the damp wet cycling clothes and exercise in a controlled environment without getting pneumonia.
- The opportunity to collaborate, talk, and listen without worrying about being hit by a car does have its advantages.
- The opportunity to play a specific music set that totally caters to your workout helps feeds the soul.
- It is a snowy, rainy, or freezing day in February and you can feel like you are riding in the Bahamas and build physiological adaption without getting skin caner.
- The opportunity to adjust the temperature to a cool ride on a hot September summer when your body has dehydrated during the day and you want some shade or shelter but must put more time in the saddle has great value.
- The ability to adjust a key workout specific to a race and simulate it in a spin class is awesome. How many of us need to do a huge hill climb, rollers, or hill repeats but do not have time to throw the bike on the hood of the car and drive an hour. A spin class is always close by and you have the ability to adjust the tension. You can climb the Alps and any 16% degree hill with a couple turns of the dial.
- Being a spin instructor has given me the opportunity to help someone or a class of students reach their fitness goals and help new cyclists build their confidence to hit the road in shape. Just as important they know what perceived effort, exertion, riding with solid form and technique are. They have the biomechanics of the pedal stroke down and what proper body and hand positioniong should be on flats, and climbs. They learned this in a safe and controlled environment.
- I provided a couple of training spin sessions to some professional cyclists last month and they left stoked and learned some new ideas on how to train on their trainer with a different thought, perspective, and strategy.
- A spin class is a great compliment to riding on the mountain bike or road bike and should be just that. A spin class does and should not be more than one and half hours. You may start to feel like you are getting cabin fever and the benefits will start to diminish sooner rather than later. It is better to spin in the early am and come back in the eveing for the second session.
I teach at University of Sports http://www.uofs.com (Spin Class) Thursday's. 6:15am-7:00am/Spin Class 5:30pm-6:15pm/Ab Lab Class 6:25pm-6:55pm.
In conclusion, spin class is a compliment to the bike when mother nature is not cooperating or time limits our efforts. So, the next time you see a spin class don't just peak in the door. Come in and join the cause. You will gain value I promise!
